Hokies travel to Radford for midweek showdown

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team will make the short trip to Radford on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. midweek contest with the Highlanders. With the possibility of inclement weather tomorrow, first pitch time could change. All updates will be announced on HokieSports.com and @VT_Softball on Twitter.

The Hokies (8-5) went 3-2 at the Pirate Invitational last weekend in Greenville, N.C. with two wins over Coppin State and a victory over Seton Hall in their first meeting on Friday. Tech also suffered two one-run losses to Seton Hall and East Carolina, the host team. In the early going, three of the Hokies’ five defeats have only been by one run.

Junior Aysha Richardson displayed her versatility last weekend as she hit .500 (8-for-16) with seven runs scored and also tossed a no-hitter in the pitcher’s circle. Richardson threw 8.0 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and allowed only two hits. Her play was spotlighted as a Top Performance of the week by the NFCA.

All-time, the Hokies are 39-10 against the Highlanders and are 12-3 when playing at Radford. Tech won both meetings last year with a 2-1 win in Blacksburg on March 2 and a 4-0 victory on the road on April 20. The Hokies’ last loss in the series came on April 14, 2010, a 9-3 defeat at Radford.

After facing the Highlanders on Wednesday, Tech will open conference play with a three-game series at Virginia from March 3-5.
