Richardson lifts Tech to 13-0 win over Seton Hall

The junior tosses a no-hitter and goes 4-for-4

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Aysha Richardson dominated in the circle and at the plate for the Virginia Tech softball team on Friday in their 13-0 win in five innings over Seton Hall. The junior went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and no-hit the Pirates to go along with a career-high five strikeouts.

The no-hitter was the first since Maggie Tyler tossed a no-no against Boston College on March 18 of last season. Richardson’s four-hit game was also the first for the Hokies since junior Breanna Davenport picked up four hits against Virginia on April 8, 2015.

The Hokies struck first in the top of the first on a two-run single from junior Jessie Mehr that made it 2-0. After Richardson retired the side in the bottom of the second, the Hokies went to work in the top of the third. Sophomore Olivia Lattin scored on an error that made it 3-0 and Davenport followed an RBI single, extending the Tech lead to 4-0.

Davenport later scored on a first-pitch home run off the bat of sophomore Emma Strouth and senior Vanessa Gonzalez plated three on a three-run bomb that made it 9-0 Hokies. The final runs of the inning came on a two RBI single from junior Caroline Schoenewald that gave Tech an 11-0 lead, capping a nine-run inning.

Tech’s nine-run third inning was its most runs scored in an inning since plating 12 runs in the bottom of the first in a 22-2 drubbing of Morgan State on March 20, 2014.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, freshman Taylor Clark sent a ball to the track that hit off the center fielder’s glove and over for the fence for her second home run of the season, making it 13-0 in favor of the Hokies.

In the bottom of the fifth, Richardson induced a fly out to center, her fifth strikeout and another fly ball to center to complete the no-hitter.
