ATLANTA - The Virginia Tech softball team dropped a 7-1 decision to Penn Sate in the final game of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge on Sunday as the Hokies finished with a 2-2 record on the weekend.
Sophomore Emma Strouth had an RBI triple while junior Jessie Mehr and redshirt sophomore Chelsea Whitcomb also picked up hits for the Hokies (5-3). Whitcomb took the loss for Tech and fell to 1-2 in the circle this season.
In the bottom of the second, junior Breanna Davenport led off with a walk and later moved to second on a groundout by senior Vanessa Gonzalez. With two outs, Strouth ripped a triple into the left field corner that scored Davenport and cut the Hokies’ deficit to one, 2-1.
Penn State responded in the top of the third with three runs that extended their lead to 5-1. The Nittany Lions would go on to tack on two more runs that made it 7-1, putting the game out of reach for the Hokies. It was also a rough game for a Tech pitching staff that had combined to allow only three runs over the previous three games combined.
Tech will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Greenvile, N.C. for the Pirate Invitational. The Hokies will face Seton Hall, East Carolina and Coppin State from Feb. 24-26.
