Hokies rally past Iowa in extra innings, 2-1
Eberle strikes out eight batters in her first complete game effort

ATLANTA - Freshman Carrie Eberle tossed 8.0 innings with eight strikeouts in her first career complete game and junior Brenna Davenport knocked in the game-winning RBI in the Virginia Tech softball team’s 2-1 extra innings victory over Iowa in the Hokies’ first game of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge on Friday.
Sophomore Olivia Lattin went 2-for-4 and freshman Taylor Clark had a pinch-hit single that proved to be the game-winning base runner for Tech (4-1).
Down 1-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, junior Jessie Mehr reached first after the ball hit her in the back on the throw running down the first base line. Mehr later advanced to second on a wild and moved to third on a groundout. With two outs and pinch hitter Elizabeth Birle at the plate, another wild pitch sent Mehr home on a 2-1 count that made it a 1-1 game.
Eberle retired the side in the top half of the eighth and Clark led off the home half by dropping a ball on the fists into shallow left field. She was replaced at first by freshman Whitney Metz. After back-to-back strikeouts, Lattin put the ball in play and reached on an infield hit. The throw then got by the first baseman which allowed Metz to move to third. That set the stage for Davenport’s walk-off single into right field.
Eberle’s lone blemish of the afternoon was a home run by Iowa’s Brooke Rozier that put the Hawkeyes in front, 1-0, in the top of the second. After the home run, Eberle retired the next two batters on groundouts to end the inning.
The Hokies didn’t have a hit in the game until junior Aysha Richardson got on with an infield single in the bottom of the third. Tech stayed close thanks to the performance of Eberle, whose eight strikeouts set a career-high, before the rally in the bottom of the seventh.
The Hokies will be back in action tomorrow against the Hawkeyes (2-4) at 12:30 p.m. after taking on Penn State at 10 a.m.
