BLACKSBURG – A well-balanced Tech squad solidified a 2-1 victory over Virginia on Friday night at Tech Softball Park in the first of a three-game series in the Commonwealth Clash.
Leadoff hitter Breanna Davenport, in addition to seniors Kelsey Mericka and Katey Smith, each logged two hits apiece in the Hokies’ game one win to improve to 26-27 overall, 11-11 in conference. The Cavaliers fall to 18-31, 7-11 in ACC play.
The Hokies struck in the first and held on from get-go. Davenport triggered Tech’s offense with a single through the left side on pitch two. Olivia Lattin made contact, reaching first on a fielder’s choice, before Smith doubled down the left line to drive in the first run.
The Cavaliers connected with an Iyana Hughes’ single in the second. However, UVA was held scoreless on the first of two top-notch plays by Vanessa Gonzalez in the left field.
The rivals maintained the 1-0 margin until the fourth frame. Mericka notched her second single of the day before a walk and a Cavaliers’ error loaded the bases. Just like the first inning, Davenport singled on her second pitch, scoring the Hokies’ second run before the frame ended.
The Cavaliers’ showed their fight in the sixth on a pair of singles and an RBI-double by Katie Park to put UVA on the board.
However, three-time ACC pitcher of the week Maggie Tyler retired the final batter on a strikeout to clinch her 20th win of the season. The ace tossed three strikeouts in her 24th complete game of the season.
Virginia’s Erika Osherow took the loss, falling to 13-20 in the series opener.
The Hokies and Cavaliers wrap up the Commonwealth Clash with a doubleheader, beginning tomorrow at noon. Senior day begins at 11:45 a.m. Fans can watch both games on ESPN3.
