TALAHASSEE, Fla. - The Virginia Tech softball team fell short in the final game of the series at JoAnne Graf Field to No. 7 Florida State on Sunday afternoon, 13-1 in five innings.
Vanessa Gonzalez led the Hokies’ offense with an RBI-double in the second and a single in the fourth but Tech ultimately dropped game three to Florida State. The Hokies hold a 24-27 overall record, 10-11 in ACC play while the Seminoles improve to 38-5, 16-1 in conference.
The Seminoles attacked first, scoring nine runs on three hits in the first inning. A Hokies’ error early in the frame resulted in four earned runs: three to starting pitcher Maggie Tyler and one to Chelsea Whitcomb in relief. Florida State’s Sydney Broderick highlighted the inning with a two-run single through the right side.
The Hokies fought back in the second inning, putting a run on the board. Kelsey Mericka drew the leadoff walk before Gonzalez doubled to left field, scoring one. Whitcomb took the second walk of the frame before the inning ended, leading two on base.
Tech held Florida State scoreless for an inning before the Seminoles posted four runs in the third. Alex Powers notched her 10th home run of the season, driving in two runs to up the score to 13-1. Olivia Lattin moved from second to pitch, ending the frame on a strikeout.
The Hokies threatened in the fourth as Gonzalez and Whitcomb notched back-to-back singles. However, a quick Seminoles’ out ended the inning with two on base.
Tech fought again in the fifth inning as Whitney Saunders singled through the right side, putting the Hokies in scoring position with Jessie Mehr on third. Florida State proved their top-10 ranking with a strikeout to clinch the 13-1 decision.
Tyler took her second loss of the weekend while relief pitchers Whitcomb and Lattin collected the no decision. The Seminoles’ Jessica Burroughs collected her 22nd win in 3.0 innings of work.
The Hokies continue their road trip on Wednesday at Elon before returning home for the final ACC series of the season against Virginia.
