FARMVILLE, Va. - Despite a combined 17 strikeouts by Maggie Tyler and Breanna Davenport’s 4-for-7 night, the Virginia Tech softball team dropped a pair of games in a midweek matchup at Longwood. The Hokies sit at an even 21-21 mark, while the Lancers improve to 22-15.
Reigning ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week Maggie Tyler tossed 17 strikeouts in 8.2 innings of work in the circle, despite taking the loss in game one. Davenport notched a single in her first two at-bats to hit 4-for-7 in the twin bill. Emma Strouth went 2-for-3 in game two with a pair of standup doubles and an RBI to put Tech on the board.
The Hokies strung together a walk and a pair of hits to strike the board first in the third inning. Jessie Mehr led off with a walk before back-to-back singles by Caroline Schoenewald and Davenport loaded the bases. Katey Smith sent a sacrifice fly to right, driving in the runner to give Tech the 1-0 advantage.
Longwood responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs on four hits, including a two-RBI double by Emily Murphy for the go-ahead run. The Lancer’s Kaylynn Batten finalized the score at 3-1 with her RBI-single through the right side before Tyler retired the side with her seventh strikeout.
Murphy batted in another run in the fifth on a double to lengthen the margin to three runs.
The Hokies made contact in the top of the six as Olivia Lattin led off single a single to the warning track. Caitlyn Nolan nearly recorded her third career home run but was robbed in left field to retire the side and finalize the score at 4-1 in favor of the home team.
Tyler threw 11 strikeouts in her 17th complete game of the season.
The Lancers’ momentum continued in game two, posting two runs off Chelsea Whitcomb in the first on a well-hit single by Karleigh Donovan to right field.
The Hokies answered back in the second, putting a run on the board. Mehr drew the walk just before Emma Strouth doubled to the left-center warning track for the run.
In the second, Longwood’s Justina Augustine sent a double to center and eventually made in home on a Tech fielding error, making the score 3-1 for the Lancers.
The Hokies did the same in the third to keep the deficit at one. Schoenewald took her base after a hit-by-pitch, advancing on Davenport single, before scoring on a pass ball to up the score to two.
Longwood tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fourth on five hits before Tyler entered the circle in relief, retiring the side with back-to-back strikeouts.
The Lancers’ Kelsey Sweeney sent solo shot to right in the bottom of the fifth, upping the score to 7-2 before Tyler posted a trio of strikeouts.
The Hokies showed their fight in the top of the sixth as Nolan slugged a two-RBI single to right-center, driving home Lattin and pinch runner Whitney Saunders to cut the deficit to three.
Strouth followed up in the seventh with her second double of the day but the Hokies could not convert, finalizing the score at 7-4.
Tyler added six strikeouts to her total for the day, picking up the no decision. Mikaela Aiken did the same in 2.2 innings of work while Whitcomb took the loss.
The Hokies return to Tech Softball Park to host Notre Dame in a noon doubleheader on Saturday followed by a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
