BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team won its 14th home opener with a 2-1 decision over Radford on Wednesday night at Tech Softball Park.
Freshman Olivia Lattin led the Hokies offense, accounting for both of Tech’s runs in the game. Radford responded with a run in the fifth inning, but Tech maintained the lead to clinch the fifth win of the season.
Lattin led off for the Hokies, doubling to left field. She then advanced on a pass ball before Katey Smith brought her home, giving Tech the early 1-0 lead.
In Lattin’s second at-bat, she launched a home run beyond the left-center field fence, extending the margin to two runs. Emma Strouth added a single in the inning but could not convert into a run.
The Highlanders showed their fight with a two singles and a run in the fifth, but the Hokies held on to the lead to earn their fifth win of the season, improving to 5-10 while the Highlanders drop to 6-4.
In her fourth complete game, Maggie Tyler threw 10 strikeouts with one run to improve to 3-5. Tyler’s 10 strikeouts was her third time throwing double-figures this season.
The Hokies open conference play on Saturday at NC State with a doubleheader at noon and a single game on Sunday. Tech’s next home game is March 12 against Pitt at noon.
