SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Hokies secured their third win of the weekend in a back-and-forth, 5-4 victory over the Ohio Bobcats on Sunday morning to conclude the Spartan Classic. Tech improves to 4-10 while Ohio drops to 6-3.
Tech quickly took a four run lead, but Ohio evened up the game at 4-all by the second inning. Olivia Lattin brought home the winning run, slugging a double down the left line as Kinsey Johnson came home to clinch the 5-4 win.
Chelsea Whitcomb started in the circle for the Hokies before Maggie Tyler came in to the game, throwing her second win of the weekend with six strikeouts.
Vanessa Gonzalez’ third home run of the season gave the Hokies a 1-0 lead by the second batter of the game. Elizabeth Birle and Caitlyn Nolan added two more hits in the inning with Nolan earning her fourth career RBI as Katey Smith crossed the plate. Tech lengthened the margin to four before Ohio threw the third out.
The Bobcats responded in the second inning, putting four runs on the board to tie up the game. Ohio’s MacKenzie Brunzwick doubled to left center scoring two to open the door for two more Bobcats to score before Tyler came in to throw the final out of the inning.
The Hokies showed their fight in the fourth as Johnson drew the lead off walk and Lattin doubled down the left line bringing the Hokies’ fifth run home to finalize the score.
Tech’s fielding, in addition to Tyler’s six strikeouts, held Ohio scoreless for the remaining five innings of play to earn the 5-4 decision.
The Hokies open their home slate on Wednesday against Radford at 5 p.m. at Tech Softball Park.
