GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team split the opening day of the Spartan Classic at Furman’s Pepsi Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Olivia Lattin’s three-run homer and Chelsea Whitcomb’s walk-off single in the fifth inning secured Tech’s 8-0 win over the Eagles before the Hokies fell short in five to the Buckeyes by a 13-run margin.
At the conclusion of today’s doubleheader, the Hokies improve to 2-9 while the Eagles and Buckeyes sit at 5-3 and 6-3, respectively.
Tech jumped on the board early on against Morehead State as Breanna Davenport, Lattin, and Katey Smith led off the first with three consecutive hits with Smith's hit bringing home the first runner.
The Hokies added three more runs in the third as both Jessie Mehr brought home Whitney Saunders followed by Caitlyn Nolan’s hit two bring home two more, upping the score to 4-0. Tech secured the first win of the day in the fifth inning with Lattin’s three-RBI home run and Whitcomb’s single to end the game.
Whitcomb tossed a complete-game shutout against Morehead State. The redshirt-freshman threw seven strikeouts, allowing a single hit during the five-inning victory. Davenport, Whitcomb, and Nolan each had two hits apiece while Lattin went 3-for-4 to lead the Hokies offense.
Tech faced a quick turnaround to face Ohio State as the second game of the doubleheader.
Despite Tech’s nearly perfect fielding throughout the day, the Hokies could not hold off Ohio State for the sixth Big Ten matchup of the season.
The Buckeyes led off with three runs in the first before tacking on seven in the second, and three in the third to finalize the score.
Katey Smith sparked the Hokies offense in the second inning with a double to the centerfield fence. Elizabeth Birle followed up with her first of two walks of the day. However, Tech stranded the pair and remained scoreless, leaving three on base.
Maggie Tyler collected the loss in her 1.2 innings pitched with Lattin closed out the remaining 3.1 innings.
The Hokies continue the Spartan Classic tomorrow with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against USC-Upstate followed by Ohio State.
