TALLAHASEE, Fla. - First baseman Elizabeth Birle rocketed a homerun to lead the Hokies’ offense despite Tech’s loss to No. 2 Michigan on Sunday morning. The Hokies wrapped up the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, falling to 1-8 while the Wolverines improved to 8-1.

Leading off the fifth inning, Birle launched a homer beyond the centerfield fence in hopes to spark a comeback for the Hokies. Tech ultimately fell short by eight runs to end the game in six.

Kinsey Johnson and Breanna Davenport tacked on two more singles after Birle’s bomb, but Tech could not overcome Michigan’s Sara Driesenga who secured her fifth win of the season.

Olivia Lattin made her collegiate debut in the circle, throwing 5.1 innings with a single earned run. Lattin threw two strikeouts against the powerhouse, Michigan, in her first appearance.

Despite giving up six runs in the first inning, the Hokies showed their resiliency, holding the second-ranked Wolverines to three runs to throughout the remaining five innings of play.

Tech responded with lead off hits in three innings by Davenport in the first, Caroline Schoenewald in the third, and Birle’s homerun in the fifth. Both Davenport and Chelsea Whitcomb notched two hits apiece. Throughout the contest, the Hokies collected eight hits but stranded eight on the base.

Whitcomb led the Hokies’ defense, collecting two putouts and five assists. However, Tech collected three errors, allowing two unearned runs.

Tech and No. 2 Michigan met for the third time in eight days to end the Hokies’ slew of six consecutive games against top-25 opponents.

The Hokies continue tournament play on Friday at USC-Update’s Spartan Classic. Tech will begin competition Friday at noon against Morehead State.
