TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Despite a double play late in the game, the Virginia Tech softball team could not hold off No. 18 Minnesota who secured the eight-run shutout on Friday afternoon’s game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Hokies dip to 1-5 while the Golden Gophers improve to 4-2.

Olivia Lattin drew a walk in the bottom of the fourth inning to end Minnesota’s perfect game thrown by Sara Groenewegen. However, the Hokies fell short in five innings to the 18th-ranked Golden Gophers who earned a seven-run advantage by the third inning.

Chelsea Whitcomb caught Minnesota’s Kayla Wenner stealing at second in the second inning to hold the margin at two runs. However, a 3-RBI homerun in the third extended Minnesota’s lead.

The Hokies’ defense bounced back from four early errors to hold off the Golden Gophers with a double play in the fifth inning. Minnesota’s Brandi McGregor flew out to Caroline Schoenewald who turned a turned a double play with Jessie Mehr tagging the runner out at first.

Maggie Tyler took the loss, pitching 2.1 innings before Mikaela Aiken threw the final 2.2.

Tech returns to JoAnne Graf Field on Saturday at noon, facing No. 2 Michigan for the second game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
