TAMPA, Fla. - Tech softball’s three hits with an RBI single in the first inning could not hold off the second-ranked Michigan Wolverines on the final day of the USF-Wilson DeMarini Tournament. The Hokies slide to 1-2 while the Wolverines improve to 2-1.
In Tech’s first trip to the plate, Olivia Lattin and Katey Smith sent back-to-back singles to left field while Kelsey Mericka walked to load the bases. Chelsea Whitcomb notched her sixth hit of the season to bring home Lattin and put the Hokies up on the Wolverines, 1-0.
However, Michigan’s Sierra Romero hit a homerun in the third to even up the game. The Wolverines added two more runs off RBI singles by Kelly Christner and Tera Blanco in the fifth inning to finalize the 3-1 decision.
Diving plays by Breanna Davenport, Mericka, Whitcomb, and Lattin led the way Tech’s defense to Michigan to a mere three runs after the Wolverines scored 27 runs in their first two games of the season.
Senior Maggie Tyler added another complete game to her record, now totaling 34 in her career with her second loss of 2016.
The Virginia Tech softball team concludes the weekend in Tampa with No. 1 Florida, scheduled for a 2:15 p.m. first pitch.
