TAMPA, Fla. - Double-digit hits with four home runs were not enough for the Virginia Tech softball team on Saturday afternoon, as Tech fell to Illinois State, 5-9. The Hokies and Redbirds hold 1-2 records after the game.

Breanna Davenport rocketed the first of Tech’s four home runs off the first pitch of the game. Vanessa Gonzalez and Chelsea Whitcomb added back-to-back home runs in the third inning, followed by a homer by Jessie Mehr in the fifth.

Despite the Hokies’ four home runs and 13 hits, ISU’s Jordan de los Reyes 4-for-4 outing with five RBI led the Redbirds on Saturday afternoon.

Mikaela Aiken started in the circle for Virginia Tech, facing 12 batters. Whitcomb tossed 4.0 innings before Maggie Tyler came in, throwing the final two outs of the game.

Katey Smith led Tech’s offense, hitting 2-for-2 with an RBI. Gonzalez added two hits for the Hokies, including her second home run of the season.

Tech jumped on the board first with Davenports leadoff homer. However Illinois State responded with three runs to take a 3-1 lead.

In the second, Smith singled up the middle, bringing Caroline Schoenewald home. The Redbirds answered back with two more runs in the bottom of the inning.

Whitcomb launched her first collegiate homerun in the third inning to narrow Tech’s deficit to one run.

Despite Mehr’s homer in the fifth inning and a single in the seventh, Illinois State closed out the game to clinch the win.

The Hokies will conclude the USF-Wilson DeMarini Tournament tomorrow, taking on No. 2 Michigan at 9 a.m. and No. 1 Florida at 1:30 p.m.
