Four Hokies named to VaSID All-State Softball University Division Team
Davenport earns first-team honor

BLACKSBURG – Four Virginia Tech softball players were named to the VaSID All-State Softball University Division Team, as announced Friday. Following the most memorable season in program history, James Madison swept all four of the major honors. Junior Jailyn Ford was named the VaSID Player of the Year, while Dukes’ head coach Mickey Dean repeated as VaSID Coach of the Year. Megan Good was named VaSID Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year to round out the top honors.

For the Hokies, freshman Breanna Davenport (OF) was the lone player to earn first-team honors while senior Kylie McGoldrick (2B), junior Kelsey Mericka (3B and junior Maggie Tyler (P) were named to the second team.

Davenport, from Statesville, North Carolina, led the team with a .331 average despite missing a majority of the final three weeks with an ankle injury. She tied for team team lead with 12 doubles and also had four home runs.

For McGoldrick, it is her fourth all-state honor while it’s the second all-state nod for Mericka, who set a new school record with 17 home runs. It marks the first all-state honor for both Davenport and Tyler.

McGoldrick joins an exclusive club as four-time all-state honorees from Tech, a club occupied previously by only Angela Tincher and Ashlee Dobbe.

With two new players earning honors this season, Virginia Tech head coach Scot Thomas has now had 37 different players named to the all-state team 72 different times in 20 seasons, including at least three on each of the last 10 teams.

James Madison dominated the 2015 VaSID All-State University Division Softball team with eight all-state selections. Longwood, the Big South champions, followed with five all-state honorees, while Tech, an at-large NCAA Regional selection, had four players on the all-state team.

George Mason and Liberty had two players each named to the all-state team, while Hampton, Norfolk State and Virginia each had a single selection on the all-state listing.
