Hokies selected for eighth NCAA Tournament
Tech will face Utah in first round of the Knoxville Regional

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team earned an at-large berth in the 2015 NCAA Softball Championship, as announced Sunday night on ESPNU. The Hokies will face Utah of the Pac-12 in the first round of the Knoxville Regional and will be joined by Longwood and eighth-seeded and host Tennessee in the regional to be held at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium on Tennessee’s campus.

Tech will enter the tournament with a 34-21 record. The Hokies and Utes will meet on Friday at 3:30 p.m. with the game being shown on ESPN3, the network’s online platform. The two schools have never met before in softball.

Utah, ranked 22nd, is 34-17 on the year and received an at-large bid out of the Pac-12. Tennessee, from the SEC, is 42-14 overall while Longwood is 33-23, winners of the Big South Conference Tournament. Tech swept Longwood earlier this season at home, but lost to Tennessee.

Also making the tournament from the ACC were champion Florida State (No. 9 national seed), Notre Dame (No. 16 national seed), North Carolina, NC State, Louisville and Pittsburgh.

This will be Tech’s eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and fourth in a row. Five of the previous seven appearances were in Knoxville, Tennessee, while the others were in Columbus, Ohio (2007) and Lexington, Kentucky (2013).
