BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech softball players Kelsey Mericka and Michelle Prong have been named to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-District III Team for the University Level as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The awards recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom.
Mericka (Kennesaw, Ga.) is a redshirt junior who is majoring in industrial and systems engineering while Prong (Victor, N.Y.) graduated from Stanford with a degree in human biology (concentration in human performance) and is now about to graduate from Virginia Tech with a master’s degree in public health.
This is the 18th and 19th time a Tech softball player has made the all-district squad, coming from 13 different players. True freshmen are not eligible for the award. Michelle Meadows and Angela Tincher both made it three times for the Hokies with both eventually earning Academic All-America honors. For a full list of award winners from Tech, click here.
Nominations and voting for the All-America programs are conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. There is a University Division (Division I programs) and a College Division (DII, DIII, NAIA, NJCAA programs).
One Academic All-District teams is chosen in each district, with those on the All-District teams placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
