HIGHLIGHTS:
• Bailey Liddle hit her first home run of the season
• Vanessa Gonzalez drove in two runs in the second game
• Lauren Gaskill had two hits in the second game

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Virginia Tech softball team dropped a pair of one-run games with Boston College Saturday afternoon at Shea Field in the front end of a crucial three-game set with the Eagles, falling 2-1 and 4-3.

In the opener, Annie Murphy’s two-run home run in the first inning was enough to give the Eagles the victory. Tech tried to claw back into it in the fifth inning when Bailey Liddle led off with a solo home run, but the Hokies couldn’t get any closer.

Freshman Allyson Frei struck out 13 Hokies, allowing just three hits, coming from Liddle, Lauren Gaskill and Kelsey Mericka. The Hokies stranded seven runners in the game, four of which were left in scoring position.

Liddle’s home run gave Tech 59 for the season, tying the school record set last season.

Maggie Tyler (L, 14-11) was the tough-luck loser, allowing two runs on three hits, two of which came in the first inning. She struck out six and walked three.

In second game, BC jumped out to a 1-0 lead with another first-inning home run, but this time the Hokies rallied to take the lead. In the third inning, with the bases loaded, Vanessa Gonzalez singled to left field to drive in Gaskill and Mericka for the Hokies’ first lead of the day.

In the fourth inning, Kelly Heinz gave up two singles and then a big three-run home run from Tatiana Cortez, her 10th of the season to put Boston College back on top. Gonzalez came through again in the fifth inning with a triple down the line to score Katey Smith, but it wasn't enough in the end.

Tech picked up seven hits against Frei (W, 19-14) this time around, two coming from both Gonzalez and Gaskill and one apiece from Smith, Michelle Prong and Liddle. Tech left 10 runners on base, five in scoring position.

Kelly Heinz (L, 12-6) went four innings, allowing four runs on four hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Tyler pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs on three hits with a strikeout.

Frei was the story of the day, throwing all 14 innings. She threw 299 pitches, allowing four runs with 21 strikeouts.

With the losses, the Hokies dropped to 33-20, 8-14 in the ACC while the Eagles clinched a berth in the ACC Softball Championship with the sweep, moving to 27-22 overall, 6-14 in the league to move past Georgia Tech for the final spot. Saturday’s results, both in Chestnut Hill and around league, lock in the Hokies to the No. 7 seed in the upcoming ACC Softball Championship. Tech, losers of seven in a row, will open with second-seeded North Carolina on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Tech Softball Park.

The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with a single game starting at noon.
