PITTSBURGH - The Virginia Tech softball team dropped a 6-5 decision to Pitt In a back-and-forth tussle Sunday afternoon at Vartabedian Field.
The Hokies got on the board in the second inning when Lauren Gaskill drew a bases-loaded walk to allow Vanessa Gonzalez to score. Tech held a 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when the Panthers broke through with a pair of runs thanks to a squeeze play and a sacrifice fly.
Tech responded right away as Katey Smith launched a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning to tie it back up. A leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth inning came around to score after a sac bunt, wild pitch and a ground out as Pitt pulled back ahead.
It was the Hokies who then put together some runs in an unconventional way, loading the bases thanks to two errors and a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt. After a double play, Kylie McGoldrick walked to load the bases back up and then Smith singled to the gap to drive in Caroline Schoenewald and Breanna Davenport to put Tech back ahead.
Again, the Panthers responded, stringing together three hits to take the lead back for a third time. But once again, the Hokies fought back as Michelle Prong blasted a solo home run to lead off the seventh inning. After a walk and two more intentional walks, Pitt scored on a wild pitch to end it in the bottom half of the inning.
Maggie Tyler went four innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Mikaela Aiken went two innings, allowing three runs on three hits with a walk. Kelly Heinz (L, 12-2) went 2/3 of an inning, giving up a run on a hit with three walks (two intentional) with a strikeout.
At the plate, the Hokies had seven hits, led by three from Smith (3 RBIs) and two from Prong. Gonzalez and Caroline Schoenewald each had one.
Tech (32-13, 8-9 ACC) will return to action on Wednesday for a single game against Radford starting at 7 p.m. The game will be Military Appreciation Day at Tech Softball Park. The Hokies downed the Highlanders earlier this season 11-1 in five innings.
