HIGHLIGHTS:
• Kelly Heinz and Maggie Tyler combined for a pair of shutouts
• The Hokies swept the three-game series from Louisville
• Lauren Gaskill had four hits on the day

BLACKSBURG - Behind a pair of dominating performances in the circle from pitchers Maggie Tyler and Kelly Heinz, the Virginia Tech softball team picked up two 2-0 wins over Louisville Saturday afternoon at Tech Softball Park to complete the three-game sweep over the Cardinals.

In the first game, the Hokies plated a run in the bottom of the first inning when Kylie McGoldrick’s infield single drove in Breanna Davenport. In the fourth inning, Lauren Gaskill’s double to the gap plated Jessie Mehr to make it 2-0 and that would be all the scoring in the game.

The Hokies had 10 hits in the game, led by three from Gaskill and two from both Mehr, Davenport and Kelsey Mericka. McGoldrick had one hit for Tech.

Kelly Heinz and Maggie Tyler teamed up for the shutout. Heinz went 3.0 innings, allowing no runs on a hit with five walks and four strikeouts. Tyler (W, 12-8) went the final 4.0 innings, allowing no runs on two hits with three strikeouts.

In the second game, the starting pitchers battled back and forth with scoreless frames until the Hokies finally broke through in the fifth inning. In an inning extended by a throwing error, Gaskill scored on Katey Smith’s bouncing single over the first baseman to give Tech a 1-0 lead.

Bailey Liddle came through in a big way in the sixth inning, sneaking a single into right field to drive in Michelle Prong.

The Hokies had six hits, coming from six different players: Davenport, Gaskill, Smith, Prong, Mehr and Liddle.

The duo of Tyler and Heinz shut down the Cardinals once again. Tyler (W, 13-6) got the start and went 5.1 innings to pick up the win. She allowed no runs on six hits with three walks. Heinz picked up her first save of the season, tossing 1.2 innings of one-hit ball with two strikeouts.

Tech (28-9, 6-8 ACC) will head to Charlottesville on Wednesday for non-conference doubleheader against the University of Virginia (11-30, 3-12) starting at 5 p.m. Because of the ACC’s scheduling format, the two teams were not scheduled to play each other in conference play, but agreed to play a non-conference date.
