BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team defeated Elon Wednesday afternoon, 6-2, at Tech Softball Park to pick up its 25th win of the season.
The Hokies got on the board in the fourth inning to make it 1-0. Kelsey Mericka singled and moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Michelle Prong. She came home on Vanessa Gonzalez’s sharp single to the gap. In the fifth inning, Katey Smith drove in Lauren Gaskill and Kylie McGoldrick with a single to right field to make it 3-0. Later in the fifth inning, freshman Jessie Mehr crushed an offering to center field, a three-run shot to break the game open.
At the plate, the Hokies had nine hits, led by two apiece from Gonzalez and Mericka. Breanna Davenport, Gaskill, McGoldrick, Katey Smith and Mehr each had one hit.
Kelly Heinz (W, 9-1) got all 21 outs, but didn’t get the complete game. The junior went all 7.0 innings, allowing no runs on two hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts. Mikaela Aiken entered the game in the seventh inning, but walked two and hit a batter, giving up two runs.
Tech (25-9) will be back in action this weekend in ACC play, hosting second-place Louisville. The two teams are scheduled to play the single game on Friday at 7 p.m., and then the doubleheader on Saturday at noon. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN3.
