NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The 24th-ranked Virginia Tech softball team was shut out for the first time in 31 games this season as it fell to Notre Dame 2-0 on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Melissa Cook Stadium. The two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but due to sub-freezing temperatures, the time was moved back and the teams played just one game.

The Irish struck first, scoring a run in the third inning on back-to-back singles. In the fourth inning, Notre Dame tacked on a run and that would be all Notre Dame pitcher Rachel Nasland would need in improving her record to 11-6. She struck out eight in picking up the shutout.

The Hokies had five hits at the plate, three coming from catcher Katey Smith while the others came from Kelsey Mericka and Breanna Davenport.

Kelly Heinz suffered her first loss of the season, falling to 8-1. She went four innings, allowing two runs on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Maggie Tyler pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs on two hits with a walk.

The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.
