HIGHLIGHTS:
• Kelly Heinz tossed a no-hitter in the opening game
• Breanna Davenport had four hits and three RBIs in the first game
• Jessie Mehr drove in the lone run in the second game
BLACKSBURG - The 24th-ranked Virginia Tech softball team swept a pair of games Wednesday against Longwood, winning the first game 11-0 in five innings behind a no-hitter from Kelly Heinz before winning the second game 1-0.
In the first inning of the first game, Breanna Davenport led off with a single and came around to score on a ground out from Katey Smith to make it 1-0. In the second inning, Vanessa Gonzalez blasted a solo home to left field to give the Hokies a 2-0 lead. Tech padded its lead later in the inning with an RBI single from Davenport and Bailey Liddle scored when Smith drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Hokies broke it open in the fourth inning, scoring seven more runs to put the game out of reach, highlighted by a pair of two-RBI hits from both Smith and Gonzalez.
While the bats came alive, the story of the game was Heinz, who tossed her second no-hitter of the season. She walked one and hit one batter, striking out six in moving to 8-0 on the season.
At the plate, the Hokies had eight hits in the shortened game, including a career-high four from Davenport. The freshman drove in three and scored two runs as well. Gonzalez had two hits and drove in three runs while Smith and Liddle each had one.
Tech struck first in the second game as Jessie Mehr smoked a ball to the gap for an RBI double to score Gonzalez in the second inning. That would be all Maggie Tyler (W, 11-5) would need as she shut down the Lancers. She allowed no runs on two hits with no walks and 11 strikeouts.
At the plate, Tech had five hits, two from Gonzalez and one apiece from Gaskill, Prong and Mehr
Tech (24-6, 3-5 ACC) will return to ACC play this weekend, traveling to Indiana for a three-game set with Notre Dame (20-11, 4-5 ACC) in South Bend. The two teams will play the doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. before playing the single game on Sunday at noon.
