BLACKSBURG - The 25th-ranked Virginia Tech softball team let a late-inning lead slip away, falling to No. 10 Florida State 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park as the Seminoles left town with a three-game sweep.
Bailey Liddle got the Hokies on the board in the fourth inning with a sharp single to the gap to plate Vanessa Gonzalez. The Seminoles rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth and another in the seventh before Kylie McGoldrick’s double in the seventh scored Breanna Davenport to account for the final score.
McGoldrick led the way with two hits and extended her on-base streak to 29 games, including all 28 this year. That streak is the third-longest in school history, trailing only Courtney Liddle (32) and Kelly Brown (31). Also picking up hits were: Lauren Gaskill, Caroline Schoenewald, Katey Smith and Liddle.
Mikaela Aiken (L, 5-1) went five-plus innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits with six walks and a strikeout. Maggie Tyler went the final two innings, giving up a run on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Tech (22-6, 3-5 ACC) returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Longwood at 4 p.m.
