• Michelle Prong hit her sixth home run in the second game

BLACKSBURG - The 25th-ranked Virginia Tech softball team gave No. 10 Florida State all it could handle on Saturday, but dropped two close, extra-inning games at Tech Softball Park. In the opener, the Seminoles pulled out a 7-5 win in eight innings and rallied for a 7-6 win in eight innings in the second contest.
In the opener, Tech went up 2-0 in the third inning when Kelsey Mericka singled home a run and Michelle Prong put down a suicide squeeze bunt to plate another run. The Noles tied it up with a two-run home run from Maddie O’Brien before Katey Smith drove in a run with a ground out in the bottom of the sixth. FSU rallied for a run in the top of the seventh to send it to extra innings, where the Seminoles plated four runs. Tech tried to rally, scoring a pair of runs, but couldn’t quite close the gap.
The Hokies picked up nine hits and five runs against the reigning national player of the year in Lacey Waldrop. Breanna Davenport, Prong and Kylie McGoldrick each had two hits while Mericka, Vanessa Gonzalez and Bailey Liddle each had one.
Maggie Tyler took the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
In the second game, FSU jumped out to a 1-0, but Prong tied it up in the second inning with her sixth home run of the season. After the Noles went back ahead, Tech battled back with a solo home run from Lauren Gaskill and a monstrous grand slam from Gonzalez. Leading 6-2 heading to the seventh inning, Tech couldn’t get the final outs it needed as FSU strung together five hits to tie it back up and send it to extra innings. There, FSU got a solo home run and the Hokies couldn’t counter.
Prong led the way with two hits and an RBI while Gonzalez, Gaskill, Mericka and Jessie Mehr each had one.
Kelly Heinz went 6.1 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts in a no decision. Tyler (L, 10-5) went 1.2 innings, allowing a run on three hits with a strikeout.
FSU (25-7, 7-1 ACC) and Tech (23-5, 3-4 ACC) will finish the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
