BLACKSBURG - On an eight-game winning streak and off to its best start in program history, the Virginia Tech softball team made its 2015 debut in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 Poll this week as the No. 25 team in the country.
Tech is 21-3 overall after sweeping Syracuse at home and then going 5-0 at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu. The mark is the best 24-game start in program history, one game better than the 20-4 start of 2005.
This marks the first time since the 2013 season that Tech is ranked in one of the national polls.
The Hokies will put that winning streak on the line this week, first traveling across the river to take on NRV rival Radford Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Radford Softball Stadium. The Highlanders are 6-12 overall after taking two games from Campbell this past weekend. Tech leads the series with Radford, 35-10, after sweeping a pair of games last year. The Hokies have won the past eight games in the series.
Live stats for the game can be found here and a free, live stream of the contest can be watched here.
This weekend, the Hokies welcome 10th-ranked Florida State to Tech Softball Park for a big three-game ACC set. The two teams will play the doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon and will then play the single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. Saturday’s games will be shown live on ESPN3, an online broadcast. Live stats for all three games can be found here.
The Seminoles are the two-time defending ACC champions and made it to the Women’s College World Series last year behind the arm of National Player of the Year Lacey Waldrop. FSU is 22-6 overall heading into a pair of mid-week games and sit at 5-1 in the ACC. FSU leads the series with the Hokies 18-16 after the two split a pair of conference games played in Fort Myers, Florida, last season.
For Saturday’s games, the first 200 fans in attendance will receive a free Virginia Tech Mason Jar.
On Sunday, in support of two former members of the Hokies softball program, free pink and teal t-shirts will be given out to the first 200 fans in attendance. Additionally, all youth league softball teams are invited to attend the game. Sundays are Softball B-I-N-G-O days at Tech Softball Park in 2015. Be sure to stop by the promotions table to pick-up your card and play along!
