• Kylie McGoldrick hit a two-run home run in the first inning

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Virginia Tech softball team continued its strong play in Hawaii, rolling past Columbia 8-0 in five innings on the fourth day of the Hawaii Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic in O’ahu.
The Hokies jumped out to a quick start in the first inning, scoring two runs on a monstrous home run from Kylie McGoldrick. The Hokies tacked on a run in the second inning when Michelle Prong scored on an error after singling and hustling to third base on Vanessa Gonzalez’s infield single. Breanna Davenport crushed an offering later in the inning, a three-run shot to center field to make it 6-0.
In the third inning, Kelsey Mericka launched her 10th home run of the season, a solo shot to left field and then Bailey Liddle drove in Gonzalez with a single to make it 8-0.
In the circle, Mikaela Aiken (W, 5-0) went the first four innings, allowing no runs on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts. Kelly Heinz pitched the final inning, striking out three.
At the plate, the Hokies had seven hits. Davenport led the way with two hits and three RBIs while McGoldrick, Mericka, Prong, Gonzalez and Liddle each had one.
Tech (20-3) will wrap up play on the island later Saturday, taking on Hawaii (17-12) at 6 p.m. local time, midnight back on the East Coast.
