HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Virginia Tech softball blew past Western Illinois with a 9-0, five-inning win on the third day of the Hawaii Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic in O’ahu.

The Hokies jumped out to a quick start in the first inning, scoring four unearned runs. Breanna Davenport and Lauren Gaskill reached on errors and Davenport came home on Kylie McGoldrick’s ground out. Kelsey Mericka’s double to the gap plated Gaskill and Michelle Prong blasted a two-run home run off the netting in left field to make it 4-0.

In the second inning, the Hokies put together a two-out rally to score a run. Davenport doubled down the left field line and scored on Gaskill’s sharp single. Gaskill scored on Smith’s double to the gap to make it 6-0. Mericka scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning and then Jessie Mehr crushed a two-run home run to right-center field, scoring Elizabeth Birle who had drawn her second walk.

In the circle, Kelly Heinz (W, 6-0) went the distance, facing just one batter over the minimum. She allowed just three hits and walked none, striking out five in the shutout win.

At the plate, the Hokies had eight hits, led by three from Mericka. Davenport, Gaskill, Smith, Mehr and Prong each had one.
