HONOLULU, Hawaii - Katey Smith’s two-RBI double in the first inning and Maggie Tyler’s strong performance in the circle helped lift the Virginia Tech softball team to a 3-1 win over the University of Hawaii on the second day of the Hawaii Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic in O’ahu.
The Hokies jumped out to a quick start in the first inning, using singles from Lauren Gaskill and Kylie McGoldrick and a two-run double from Smith to take a 2-0 lead. That’s the way it stood until the third inning when Hawaii used a walk, a double and a fielder’s choice to plate a run, but left two in scoring position as the Hokies escaped the jam.
Tech put together a two-out rally in the fifth inning, extended by a UH error. McGoldrick singled and moved up when Smith reached on a error before Kelsey Mericka laced a single just inside the third base line to score McGoldrick.
In the circle, Tyler (W, 9-3) went the distance, allowing one run on three hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts, holding a UH team that came in with 30 home runs in the park.
At the plate, the Hokies had eight hits, led by three from McGoldrick and two from Smith. Gaskill, Mericka and Michelle Prong each had one hit.
Tech (18-3) will be back in action on Friday, taking on Western Illinois (6-6) at 3:30 p.m. local time, 9:30 Eastern.
