BLACKSBURG - Behind a shut out from Maggie Tyler and a pair of clutch hits from Lauren Gaskill and Kelsey Mericka, the Virginia Tech softball team completed a three-game sweep of Syracuse with a 2-0 win at Sunday at Tech Softball Park.
Like Saturday’s second game, this one was also a pitcher’s dual as well as the two teams were scoreless through four innings. In the fifth inning, Vanessa Gonzalez reached with a single and scored on Gaskill’s triple to the gap. Clinging to a 1-0 lead, Mericka blasted her ninth home run of the season in the sixth inning, a solo shot to left-center field.
That would be all Tyler (W, 8-3) would need as she shut down the Orange for the second day in a row. The junior went the distance, allowing no runs on five hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
The Hokies had four hits, one apiece from Breanna Davenport, Gaskill, Mericka and Gonzalez.
Tech (16-3, 3-2 ACC) will depart Monday for its Spring Break trip in Hawaii. The Hokies will play five games in Honolulu, starting with a Wednesday game against St. Bonaventure.
