• Caroline Schoenewald hit her first career home run

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team picked up a pair of wins Saturday against Syracuse at Tech Softball Park, winning 10-2 in five innings in the first game before taking a hard-fought 2-0 victory in the second contest.
In the first game, the Hokies fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, but battled back in the second inning with a three spot as the Cuse walked two in with the bases loaded and committed an error. In the fourth inning, freshman Caroline Schoenewald launched her first career home run, a solo shot to left-center field to make it 4-2. The Hokies tacked on four more runs in the inning, highlighted by Kylie McGoldrick’s sharp RBI single up the middle. In the fifth inning,
The Hokies had eight hits at the plate, led by two apiece from McGoldrick, Katey Smith and Jessie Mehr. Elizabeth Birle and Schoenewald each had one hit.
In the circle, Maggie Tyler (W, 7-3) shrugged off a tough first inning to shut down the Cuse the rest of the way. The junior allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in five innings.
The second game was a pitcher’s dual as Tech’s Kelly Heinz and Syracuse’s Jocelyn Cater combined for 26 strikeouts and allowed just three hits, but it was McGoldrick who came through with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to win it for the Hokies.
Neither team could muster much action at the plate, but in the sixth inning, Vanessa Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved up on a wild pitch. She came home the easy way as McGoldrick blasted a 2-2 pitch into the trees in left-center field, her fourth of the season.
That would be all Heinz (W, 5-0) would need as she cruised the whole way. She allowed just one infield single and a pair of walks while striking out a career-high 16 batters.
Breanna Davenport and McGoldrick had the only hits in the game.
With the sweep, Tech improved to 15-3 overall, 3-2 in the ACC while the Orange dropped to 7-10, 0-2 in the conference.
The two teams will play the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
