GREENVILLE, N.C. - Michelle Prong’s RBI double in the top of the seventh inning lifted the Virginia Tech softball team to a 4-3 win over East Carolina Sunday afternoon at the ECU Softball Stadium on the final day of the Pirate Invitational.
In the first inning, Katey Smith and Kelsey Mericka each had a sacrifice fly to help the Hokies jump out to an early 2-0 lead. The Pirates responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first as the leadoff batter walked, moved up on a pair of wild pitches and scored on a bloop single. ECU got a double and a single to tie things up in the fourth inning and then used another hit to take the lead.
After falling behind for the first time the whole weekend, the Hokies manufactured a run in the top of the fifth inning. Prong scored on Breanna Davenport’s double off the wall in left field to tie it up and then Prong drove in Mehr with a double to the gap in the seventh inning. The Pirates had a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh as they had runners on second and third base, but Maggie Tyler (W, 6-1) got two strikeouts and a pop up to end the threat and the game.
Mikaela Aiken got the start, going 3.2 innings. The freshman allowed three runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts, not factoring into the decision. Tyler threw the remaining 3.1 innings, allowing no runs on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
At the plate, the Hokies had seven hits, two coming from Davenport and one apiece from Prong, McGoldrick, Jessie Mehr, Vanessa Gonzalez and Smith.
Lauren Gaskill scored a run in the first inning, giving her 151 for her career and tying her with Bronwyn Blair for the most in school history.
Tech (13-1) is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday for a single game at Radford at 4 p.m. Stayed tuned for updates as weather conditions could come into play.
