GREENVILLE, N.C. - Behind Kelly Heinz’s second career no-hitter, the Virginia Tech softball team rolled past Seton Hall 9-0 in five innings Sunday morning at the ECU Softball Stadium on the final day of the Pirate Invitational.
In the first inning, Tech struck for a run when Lauren Gaskill walked and stole second base and came home on Katey Smith’s single to right field. In the second stanza, freshman Jessie Mehr scored on Davenport’s double to the gap and then Caroline Schoenewald scored on a fielder’s choice from Gaskill. Kylie McGoldrick drove home Davenport with a sacrifice fly to give the Hokies their third run of the inning. Kelsey Mericka drove home Gaskill with a sharp single to center to make it 5-0.
McGoldrick came through again in the third inning, driving in two runs with a triple to center field to make it 7-0 and Mehr cranked her first home run, a two-run shot to plate Michelle Prong, to give Tech a 9-0 lead.
Heinz (W, 4-0), a junior, struck out six and walked one in tossing her second no-hitter. Her first came in her first collegiate start against Southern Illinois in 2013. Mikaela Aiken also tossed a no-hitter against this same Seton Hall team on Saturday.
The top five in the order for the Hokies all drove in at least a run as the offense cranked out nine runs on eight hits in four innings at the plate. Davenport, Mehr and Mericka each had two hits while McGoldrick and Smith each had one. Gaskill scored two more time to give her 150 career runs scored, one shy of tying the school record for career runs scored held by Bronwyn Blair.
Tech (12-1) will wrap up the weekend’s festivities with a 4 p.m. game against East Carolina.
