GREENVILLE, N.C. - Virginia Tech head softball coach Scot Thomas picked up his 700th career victory as the Hokies downed East Carolina 6-1 Saturday afternoon at ECU Softball Stadium.

In the first inning, Breanna Davenport led off the game with a walk and came all the way around to score on Kylie McGoldrick’s double to the gap. In the third inning, Michelle Prong walked and moved up to third base on Davenport’s double to the gap. She scored on Lauren Gaskill’s squeeze bunt single and then Davenport later scored on a fielder’s choice. With Kylie McGoldrick on board after a walk, Kelsey Mericka continued her torrid start to the season, blasting her eighth home run of the season to make it 5-0.

In the sixth inning, the Hokies worked a little two-out magic as Bailey Liddle drew a walk and scooted around from first base to score on Prong’s double to the gap.

Maggie Tyler (W, 5-1) was dominant in the circle, striking out 15 against two walks and three hits in the complete-game victory.

At the plate, Davenport led the way with a pair of hits and two RBIs while McGoldrick had two hits and two walks. Katey Smith, Mericka, Liddle and Prong each had one.

Tech (11-1) is schedule to play Seton Hall (10 a.m.) and ECU (3 p.m.) again Sunday, but rain is in the forecast for the Greenville area.
