HIGHLIGHTS
• Tech suffered its first loss of the season, falling 8-5 to Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Virginia Tech softball team suffered its first loss of the season, an 8-5 setback to Jacksonville State Sunday afternoon on the final day of the North Florida Tournament.
The Hokies fell behind 1-0 in the second inning, but responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning to tie it up on a single from freshman Breanna Davenport. The game remained tied until the fifth inning, when the Gamecocks plated three runs with two outs in the inning to pull away from the Hokies. But Tech once again responded to adversity, fighting to get right back into it. Davenport led off with a double and scored on Lauren Gaskill’s fielder’s choice as the throw wasn’t in time. Kylie McGoldrick scored on Vanessa Gonzalez’s single up the middle to make it 4-3. Elizabeth Birle came through with a big two-RBI single to plate Gonzalez and pinch runner Whitney Saunders to give Tech its first lead of the game.
JSU rallied right back, picking up four runs on four hits to regain the lead in the sixth inning. This time, the Hokies couldn’t muster a third comeback, falling 8-5 despite nearly tying the game up twice in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Kelly Heinz got the start, and came in later in relief, but did not factor into the decision. She allowed a run on four hits with a walk and a strikeout in four innings pitched. After two brilliant performances earlier in the weekend, Maggie Tyler (L, 4-1) allowed seven runs (five earned) on five hits with a walk and no strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
At the plate, Davenport led the way with a pair of hits and an RBI. Gaskill also had a pair of hits while Birle had a hit and two RBIs . McGoldrick, Gonzalez and Bailey Liddle each had one hit.
Tech (9-1) will be back in action next weekend as it participates in the Pirate Invitational, hosted by East Carolina University. The Hokies will open play on Friday in Greenville, North Carolina, against Seton Hall at 12:30 p.m.
