CONWAY, S.C. - Kylie McGoldrick hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and Maggie Tyler made it stand up as the Virginia Tech softball team improved to 4-0 with a 6-0 shutout over Coastal Carolina Saturday evening at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic.

McGoldrick hit her second home run of the season, a two-run shot on a 2-1 count in the first inning to drive in Lauren Gaskill. That’s the way it would stand until the seventh inning when the Hokies broke it open. Michelle Prong hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run to give Tech a 4-0 lead and then singles from McGoldrick and Katey Smith plated two more insurance runs.

Tyler (W, 2-0) was sensational, tossing a four-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in the win. She walked one and only allowed three runners to reach second base all evening. The junior threw just 108 pitches in seven innings, 76 of which were strikes.

The middle of the order came through for the Hokies as Gaskill, McGoldrick and Smith each had two hits and drove in four of the six runs. Breanna Davenport had a hit, as did Kelsey Mericka and Vanessa Gonzalez and Pron had the big pop in the seventh inning.

Tech (4-0) will wrap up play in Conway on Sunday with a 9:30 a.m. game against Lafayette, a team it beat 10-0 in five innings on Friday.
