HIGHLIGHTS
• Tech recorded 10 runs on nine hits in the shortened game
• Maggie Tyler and Mikaela Aiken combined to allow just one hit

CONWAY, S.C. - After holding on to beat Maryland in thrilling fashion in its first game of the day, the Virginia Tech softball team left no doubt in its second game, blasting Lafayette 10-0 in five innings Friday afternoon at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina University.

Just like in the first game of the day, the Hokies jumped out to a big lead early on. In the first inning, Kelsey Mericka signified she is back in a big way after missing most of the past two seasons, crushing a solo home run to give Tech a 3-0 lead. The Hokies tacked on five more runs in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from senior Kylie McGoldrick.

In the third inning, Lauren Gaskill drove in a run with a single and then McGoldrick drove in the 10th run with a single to center.

Maggie Tyler (W, 1-0) and freshman Mikaela Aiken combined to allow just one hit in the five innings. Tyler went 4.0 innings, allowing no runs on one hit with a walk and four strikeouts. Aiken pitched the final inning, giving up just a walk.

Gaskill had a big game at the plate, recording two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Breanna Davenport had two more hits and scored two runs while McGoldrick had two hits and three RBIs. Freshman Caroline Schoenewald, in her first collegiate start, picked up two hits and scored two runs. Katey Smith and Mericka each had one hit to round out the offense.

Tech (2-0) and Maryland will meet again on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., and then the Hokies will take on the host Chanticleers at 5:30 p.m.
