HIGHLIGHTS

CONWAY, S.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team opened up its 20th season of play Friday by holding off Maryland 7-6 at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina University.

Tech put three runs on the board in the first inning when Kylie McGoldrick doubled home freshman Breanna Davenport and senior Lauren Gaskill and then McGoldrick scored on Katey Smith’s sac fly.

In the second inning, Davenport cranked a two-run home run - the first of her career - to make it 5-1. Tech tacked on a run in the fourth and fifth inning before the Terps came alive late. Maryland plated two runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to make it a one-run game.

In the seventh, Maryland loaded the bases with one out, but Maggie Tyler got a strikeout and line out to end the game and secure the win.

Kelly Heinz (W, 1-0) went 5.1 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Tyler (S, 1) went the final 1.2 innings to record the save. She didn’t allow a run or a hit, but walked two while striking out one.

Davenport led the way with two hits and two RBIs. McGoldrick, Smith, Logan Spaw, Bailey Liddle, Gonzalez and Elizabeth Birle each had one.

Tech (1-0) will be back in action immediately, taking on Lafayette. Tech and Maryland will meet again on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
