KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 2014 Virginia Tech softball season came to a conclusion Saturday night at the NCAA Regional with a 12-3 loss to Lipscomb University at Lee Stadium.

The Lady Bisons scored twice in the second inning, but Tech rallied in the bottom half of the inning. Bailey Liddle drove in pinch runner Aysha Richardson with a single to left field before Laura Wolff plated Dani Anderson with a fielder’s choice groundout.

In the fourth inning, Tech starter Kelly Heinz (L, 21-14) ran into trouble as she gave up a leadoff single and a two-run home run, forcing head coach Scot Thomas to make a pitching change.

Lipscomb tacked on another run in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Haley Elliott to make it 5-2 before the Hokies got one back in the fifth inning. Wolff picked up her first career triple and scored on Lauren Gaskill’s ground out to make it 5-3, but Elliott cranked a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning and then LU put four more unearned runs on the board to ice the game as the Hokies’ season came to an end.

Tech had seven hits at the plate, led by two from Logan Spaw and Bailey Liddle and one apiece from Wolff, Katey Smith and Kylie McGoldrick.

Heinz went three-plus innings, allowing four runs on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Maggie Tyler went four innings, allowing eight runs (three earned) on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

The loss ends Tech’s season at 36-23 as the Hokies advanced to their third consecutive NCAA Tournament. It also marked the end of four senior’s careers – Amanda Ake, Dani Anderson, Kat Banks and Wolff - as well as longtime assistant coach Al Brauns, who is retiring after 16 seasons on the staff.
