KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 10th-seeded and eighth-ranked Tennessee softball team used the long ball to cruise past the Virginia Tech Hokies 12-0 in the five innings Saturday in the championship bracket of the 2014 NCAA Softball Regional at Lee Stadium.
In the first inning, Annie Aldrete hit a two-run home run to give UT an early lead. In the second inning, after two singles, Megan Geer lifted a three-run home run and then Aldrete put one over the scoreboard to make it 6-0.
In the third inning, the Lady Vols didn’t let up, cranking out three more home runs to make it 12-0.
Tennessee hit six home runs in the game, tying the Virginia Tech school record for most given up in a game, set by Georgia Tech in 2007.
Maggie Tyler (L, 15-9) went 1.2 innings and then re-entered in the third inning. She threw 4.1 innings total, allowing six runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Freshman Elizabeth Birle tossed 2/3 of an inning, allowing six runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Tech had two hits at the plate, both coming from Vanessa Gonzalez.
The Hokies (36-22) will have now face an elimination game later Saturday night at 7 p.m. against the winner of Lipscomb and Charleston Southern. Tennessee (44-10) advance to Sunday’s title game and have to be beaten twice by whichever team survives Saturday’s action.
