KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Three members of the Virginia Tech softball squad were named to the NFCA’s all-region team, as announced Thursday morning by the organization. Junior Kylie McGoldrick (second base) was named to the first team while freshman outfielder Vanessa Gonzalez and sophomore catcher Katey Smith were named to the third team.
Virginia Tech is in the Mid-Atlantic Region and all three are now eligible for All-America honors.
For McGoldrick, it’s her second all-region honor as she also made the first team last season. The Stratford, N.J., native was a third-team All-ACC selection and leads the team with a .346 batting average. She has eight home runs, 12 doubles and 24 RBIs.
It’s the first regional honors for Smith and Gonzalez. Smith was a third-team All-ACC selection and leads the team with 49 RBIs. She is batting .319 with nine home runs and 11 doubles. Gonzalez has started 54 games in left field and is batting .342 - second on the team. She leads the team with 31 walks and has 12 doubles, eight home runs and 31 RBIs.
Tech (35-21) will begin NCAA Regional play Friday afternoon in Knoxville, Tenn., against second-seeded Lipscomb at 3:30 p.m.
