BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team (34-20, 19-9) will begin action in the 2014 ACC Softball Championship hosted by the University of Maryland Thursday night as the No. 3 seed, taking on sixth-seeded Syracuse (23-23, 12-12) at 7:30 p.m. at Maryland Softball Stadium in College Park. The game will be broadcast live on the ACC’s regional sports networks (see below) as well as online on ESPN3 outside of the ACC footprint (blacked out in ACC area).

Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for students/seniors for an all-session pass and $5 for adults and $3 for students/seniors per day.

The two teams squared off in their final weekend of the regular season two weekends ago in Syracuse. The Cuse won game one, 5-4 in eight innings before the Hokies won game two, 10-0 in six innings. On Sunday, the Orange cruised to a 7-3 win on Senior Day to take the series.

The Hokies are 17-9 all time in the ACC Tournament, as their first appearance dates back to 2005. Tech has advanced to at least the semifinals in seven of the nine ACC Tournaments it’s played in and has made four championship game appearances, winning two titles. Tech’s last title came in 2008 in College Park.

In the nine ACC Tournaments, the Hokies are 6-0 against Maryland, 3-0 against North Carolina, 3-2 against both Florida State and Virginia, 1-2 against NC State and 1-3 against Georgia Tech. The Hokies have never played Boston College in the ACC Tournament.

No host team has won the ACC Championship since Florida State did in 2004. That streak will continue this year as the Terrapins were one of three teams not to qualify for the tournament.

All seven tournament games will be broadcast on either ESPN2, ESPN3, or the league’s regional sports networks (RSN). All four of Thursday’s first round games will be carried by both RSN and ESPN3. Friday’s semifinals will be on RSN and ESPN3 at 1 and 3:30 p.m., and the championship on Saturday at 2 p.m. can be seen on ESPN2. Tech’s opener against Syracuse will have Tom Werme and Barbara Jordan on the call.
