ATLANTA, Ga. – Katey Smith’s RBI single in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the difference as the Virginia Tech softball team defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 6-5, completing the series sweep, at Mewborn Field on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Hokies move to 22-16, 11-6 in the ACC while Georgia Tech falls to 19-15, 8-11 in the ACC. The Hokies have now won six ACC games in a row. Kelly Heinz (W, 12-11) earned the victory after pitching three innings and only allowing two hits and one run. Maggie Tyler earned the start for Tech pitching four innings, allowing seven hits and four runs.
In the first inning, Vanessa Gonzalez hit a double to left center with a pair of runners on base sending Kylie McGoldrick home to put the Hokies up 1-0. A sacrifice fly from Smith on the next at bat sent Gonzalez home to bring the lead to 2-0 in the first.
The Yellow Jackets responded in the third inning, knotting the game at two apiece when Georgia Tech’s Kanani Cabrales singled through the left side to plate a pair of runners. The Hokies went up 4-2 in the top of the fourth inning when Lauren Gaskill doubled to left center to score Amanda Ake and Dani Anderson.
Tech extended its lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning when Gonzalez homered to right center, her third home run of the season. The Yellow Jackets rallied back with a big bottom of the fifth inning, using a sacrifice fly and a home run to score three runs to level the score again at 5-5.
In the top of the seventh inning, McGoldrick led off with a double and moved up on a ground out from Gonzalez before Smith singled through the left side to send McGoldrick home to gain the lead back. Quality pitching from Heinz and fielding from the rest of the team in the seventh inning secured the 6-5 victory for the Hokies.
Smith, Gaskill and Gonzalez each recorded two RBI apiece in the game. Tyler posted two strikeouts while Heinz logged one.
In the series this weekend against the Yellow Jackets, the Hokie bats were hot as the team recorded 29 total hits in three games, including two double-digit hit games.
Tech returns to ACC play on Wednesday night with a doubleheader against Pittsburgh at Tech Softball Park. Game one begins at 4 p.m.
