BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team was swept by in-state James Madison Wednesday at Tech Softball Park, falling 5-2 and 9-4. JMU improved to 25-11 with the wins while Tech fell to 19-16.
In the first game, JMU broke open a scoreless game in the third inning with three runs on four hits. In the fourth inning, the Hokies battled back with two runs of their own as Dani Anderson drove in Kylie McGoldrick with a single and then pinch runner Toni Erwin scored on Amanda Ake’s suicide squeeze bunt.
In the fifth inning, JMU struck back for three hits to chase Tech starter Kelly Heinz and the Dukes eventually plated a run to widen their lead and then Eric Field drove in the fifth run with her third hit of the game in the sixth inning.
Tech had three hits, one apiece from Anderson, McGoldrick and Lauren Gaskill.
Heinz (L, 10-11) went four innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Maggie Tyler pitched the final three innings, allowing a run on two hits with three strikeouts.
In the second game, JMU wasted little time in getting on the board, scoring when Jailyn Ford hit a two-run home run off the scoreboard in the first inning. The Dukes plated three more runs in the second inning to expand their lead. Tech got two unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning, but left runners on second and third to end the rally.
JMU got those runs right back, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third to take a 7-2 lead and then Ford hit her second home run of the game to make it 8-2.
Tech tried to close the gap in the fifth inning as Gaskill doubled to right field and then McGoldrick launched her eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field. The Dukes got a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to account for the final tally.
Tyler (L, 9-5) went 1.1 innings, allowing five runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Heinz went 1.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with a strikeout. Freshman Elizabeth Birle tossed the final four innings, allowing two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
The Hokies had eight hits, two from both McGoldrick and Logan Spaw and one apiece from Gaskill, Vanessa Gonzalez, Katey Smith and Amanda Ake.
The Hokies will travel to Atlanta for a three-game ACC series against Georgia Tech this weekend. The two teams will play the doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and the single game on Sunday at noon.
