BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team wrapped up its weekend series with Boston College Sunday, finishing off a 5-4 win in a halted game from Saturday before holding on for a 4-3, six-inning victory over the Eagles in the final game.
After winning the first game of the series 4-3, the Hokies led 5-3 in the sixth inning of the second game before rain halted the game. Upon resumption, BC got the Hokies out in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored a run in the seventh, but Maggie Tyler got the last out as the Hokies held on for the win.
Kylie McGoldrick had two hits in the game while Lauren Gaskill, Katey Smith, Logan Spaw and Bailey Liddle each had one.
Kelly Heinz (W, 9-10) went four innings, allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts, but had six walks. Tyler escaped two jams late and threw three innings to pick up the save. She allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
In the second game, Kat Banks gave the Hokies a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly, but the Eagles tied it up in the third inning on a solo home run. In the third inning, McGoldrick led off with a double and Dani Anderson drew a walk before Spaw ripped a three-run home run just inside the left field foul pole to make it 4-1. It was the junior’s first home run since she hit two as a freshman two seasons ago.
The Eagles chipped away at the lead, scoring a single run in both the fourth and fifth innings, but couldn’t get the tying run before the drop-dead time came. The game was called at 5 p.m. in the sixth inning due to a pre-agreed upon ending time because of BC’s travel schedule.
Tyler got the start and lasted into the third inning before being relieved by Heinz. Tyler allowed three runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts in the no decision. Heinz (W, 10-10) went the final three innings, allowing a run on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Spaw led the way at the plate with two hits and three RBIs while McGoldrick notched a pair of doubles. Gaskill, Anderson and Liddle each had one hit.
Tech improved to 19-14 overall, 8-6 in the ACC with the sweep while Boston College dropped to 16-13, 2-7 in the conference.
The series marked the first time Tech has swept a three-game series by one run in every game since joining the ACC for the 2005 season.
The Hokies will host in-state rival James Madison University on Wednesday in a doubleheader that begins at 4 p.m. JMU is 23-11 and was just outside the top 25 this week, but lost two of three at the College of Charleston this weekend
