BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team dropped a 9-5 decision to No. 22 Notre Dame Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park. Despite the loss, the Hokies won the series 2-1 after sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Hokies scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead, but the Irish responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to grab the lead. In the fourth inning, Cassidy Whidden blasted a solo home run to make it 3-1.

The Hokies battled back to tie the game up on a two-run, two-out single from Vanessa Gonzalez, but again, the Hokies gave the run right back as the second batter of the inning, Katey Haus, laced a solo home run down the line to make it 4-3 in favor of the Irish.

Notre Dame (19-7, 3-3 ACC) put the game away in the sixth inning when it loaded the bases with no outs and eventually scored five runs to take a 9-3 lead.

Tech tried to battle back in the seventh inning as Katey Smith hit a two-run home run, but it wasn’t enough as the Irish hung on.

Tech had several chances to bust it open, but left the bases loaded twice and left nine total runners on base.

Maggie Tyler went the first two innings before being lifted for Kelly Heinz to start the third inning. Heinz (L, 7-8) went 3.1 innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts, but was relieved for Tyler after the Irish got to her in the sixth inning. Tyler threw the final 2.2 innings and 4.2 total, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with a strikeout on the day.

The Hokies had eight hits, three from Gonzalez and two from Katey Smith while Dani Anderson, Elizabeth Birle and Lauren Gaskill each had one.

Tech (13-12, 4-4 ACC) will return to action on Wednesday, hosting Morgan State in a non-conference doubleheader slated to begin at 4 p.m.
