BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Virginia Tech softball team split a pair of games Friday on the first day of the FAU Parents’ Weekend Tournament, first beating No. 14 South Alabama 1-0 before falling 1-0 to the host FAU Owls.

In the opener, the Hokies were facing a tough pitcher in USA’s All-American Hannah Campbell, who took a perfect game into the seventh inning. Kylie McGoldrick ruined that with a leadoff double, and after an out and an intentional walk to Vanessa Gonzalez, Katey Smith ripped a single up the middle to plate McGoldrick easily ahead of the throw.

McGoldrick, Gonzalez and Smith were the only players to reach base, but it was pitcher Kelly Heinz (W, 5-5) who kept Tech in the game. She battled around some jams early on, but ended up tossing a two-hit shutout of the Jaguars, striking out five. She walked three and hit three batters, but worked around the free passes to keep the Jags off the board.

Campbell had five strikeouts, but none after the fourth inning as the Hokies made the adjustment at the plate.

It marked the first time since last season that Tech had beaten a top-15 squad. The Hokies beat No. 14 Michigan 3-2 in Fullerton, Calif., last year.

In the second game, Florida Atlantic put together three singles in the first inning to plate the lone run of the game to beat the Hokies 1-0.

McGoldrick and Lauren Gaskill each had two hits to account for the offense as the Hokies managed just six hits in two games on Friday. Maggie Tyler (L, 4-3) went the distance in the second game, allowing the one run on five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts, but wasn’t given much help offensively as the Hokies were shut out for the third time this season.

Tech (9-8) will be back in action on Saturday, taking on Michigan State at 11:15 a.m., followed by Hofstra at 1:30 p.m.
