TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Behind a sixth-inning triple from Amanda Ake and a four-hit shutout from Maggie Tyler, the Virginia Tech softball team finished the Easton Bama Bash on a strong note, beating UCF 1-0 Sunday morning at Rhoads Stadium on the campus of the University of Alabama.

Both teams had chances throughout the game, but it was the Hokies who finally punched a run across late in the game. Lauren Gaskill led off the sixth inning with a slap single to left field and promptly stole second base to put herself in scoring position. One batter later, Ake came through with a triple down the left field line to easily plate Gaskill from second base.

That was enough for Tyler, who was in control from the beginning. The sophomore scattered just four hits over seven innings with a walk and three strikeouts to record her third complete-game shutout of the season.

At the plate, Tech had five hits, one apiece from Kylie McGoldrick, Katey Smith, Aysha Richardson, Gaskill and Ake.

McGoldrick and Vanessa Gonzalez were both named to the all-tournament team.

Tech (7-5) is scheduled to open its home slate on Wednesday at 5 p.m. against NRV rival Radford, weather permitting. The Hokies will open ACC play next weekend at home, hosting the University of North Carolina in a three-game set at Tech Softball Park on Saturday and Sunday.
