In the opener, Tech outhit the Cowgirls, but a pair of unearned runs scored on a throwing error in the sixth inning to lift MSU to the win. Tech committed three errors in the game, including two in the sixth inning when the game-winning runs were scored.
Kylie McGoldrick led the way with two singles while Vanessa Gonzalez, Katey Smith and Dani Anderson each had one. Maggie Tyler (L, 2-2) went the distance, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
In the second game, the Crimson Tide scored first on a two-out single, but Tech battled back in the bottom half of the stanza. Gonzalez fouled off several pitches and worked an eight-pitch at bat before blasting her second home run of the season, a solo shot to dead center field.
Alabama would score three more runs in the second inning, but Gonzalez dropped a single into center field in the third inning to plate McGoldrick to cut the lead in half. Kaila Hunt hit a two-out, three-run home run in the fourth inning and then Holly Fictner had a two-out, two-RBI single to pull away from the Hokies. Four of the five run-producing hits for Alabama came with two outs in the inning.
Tech didn’t give up as in the fifth inning, McGoldrick crushed a pitch to right field for her second home run of the season to make it 9-3, and then Lauren Gaskill hit a solo home run one batter later to make it 9-4, but the Tide scored two in the sixth on two bases-loaded walks and three more in the seventh inning. In Tech’s half of the seventh, Aysha Richardson tripled and scored when Kiara Ota reached on an error.
Gonzalez had two hits for the Hokies, driving in a pair of runs as well, while Smith had a double and McGoldrick and Gaskill had home runs. Richardson picked up her first collegiate hit, a leadoff triple in the seventh inning.
Kelly Heinz (L, 4-3) went six innings, allowing 11 runs runs on 10 hits with 11 walks and six strikeouts. Maggie Tyler pitched the final inning, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits.
Tech (6-5) will try to finish the weekend strong on Sunday, taking on UCF (7-2) at 11 a.m. local time (noon ET).
