GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team moved to 5-2 on the season with a sweep of UNC Greensboro Tuesday afternoon, beating the Spartans 12-4 in six innings before getting a 4-0 win in the night cap.

In the opener, the Hokies fell behind 1-0 early on, but put a nine-spot on the board in the third inning to blow the game open. With the bases loaded, Katey Smith doubled to the gap to clear the bases and then scored on a bad throw on the same play. Kylie McGoldrick drove in two runs with a single and then newcomer Michelle Prong plated a pair of runs with a double. The final run of the inning came when Vanessa Gonzalez drove in Prong with a single of her own.

In the fourth inning, pinch hitter Jessica McNamara blasted a two-run home run off the scoreboard in right-center field. After the Spartans scored three runs to cut it to 11-4, Tech got a sac fly from Logan Spaw in the sixth inning to make it 12-4. With the Hokies up eight runs after six innings, the game was ended because of the run-ahead rule.

The Hokies recorded nine hits at the plate, two apiece from Gonzalez and Smith. Also picking up hits were McGoldrick, Prong, McNamara, Laura Wolff and Bailey Liddle.

Kelly Heinz (W, 3-2) went all six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

The second game was a closer affair, but sophomore Maggie Tyler tossed a gem in the circle to shut the door on any Spartan rally. The Poquoson, Va., native went the distance, allowing just two hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in tossing her second-career shutout.

Tech got on the board in the second in inning when Dani Anderson ripped a double down the left field line to score Smith from first base while moving to third base on the throw home. One batter later, Kat Banks drove in Anderson with a ground out to second base.

That’s the way it stayed until the seventh inning when Tech put it away. Gonzalez walked and then made the easy trot around the bases when Amanda Ake blasted her third home run of the season, a two-run blast to left field.

Anderson (two doubles), Smith and Banks each had two hits while Gonzalez, Ake and Lauren Gaskill each had one.

Tech (W, 5-2) has now won 12 straight against the Spartans and holds a 23-4 lead in the series.

The Hokies will head to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Easton Bama Bash, hosted by the University of Alabama. They’ll play a pair of games on Friday, taking on McNeese State at 1:30 p.m. local time (2:30 ET) and No. 9 Alabama at 4 p.m. local time (5 p.m. ET). Tech will play the same two teams on Saturday (11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. local) before playing undefeated UCF on Sunday at 11 a.m. local time (noon ET).
